301 + 320 = Good?

In my last BIT301 lecture, I was pleasantly surprised that the topic of the day was Database Management. (I tried to link the lecture to this post but was unable to because it is under my ctools. Is there some way to do that?) I had been having some trouble grasping the concepts in BIT320, but it never occurred to me that most of my classmates had already been introduced to many of the topics in BIT301. The lecture included definitions of fields, records, primary keys, and attributes to name a few. It also went into the process of normalization and ER modeling explaining things such as 3NF and one-to-many relationships. Of course it did not go into depth, but I did not realize that any of these topics were spoken about at all in 301. I originally thought that taking both BITs in the same semester could be a disadvantage to me but at this point I think it could be helpful. I understood the 301 lecture better than the other students and hopefully I will be in good shape for the database excel lab next week. It was also a nice review for 320 concepts and made the things we are doing a lot clearer. Hopefully I in fact did make a good decision to take the classes simultaneously.

When to blog?

I am wondering about how often exactly we need to be blogging. I know that the general rule is to blog twice a week, but I am unclear as to when the weeks begin and end. I don't know if there was a set day when the blogging began, and I wonder how strict the grading of this is. Every Monday will our Weblogs be checked and if we haven't added two posts will we lose points? Or every Tuesday, or Thursday? Or is it just at the end of the semester we need to have a certain amount of posts? For example, if I have a busy week and only blog once that week but then blog three times the next week...is that allowed? I have noticed that the rest of the class has anywhere from two to at least ten posts at this point. I am not even sure how many weeks we have been blogging and how many we should have done. I think I should probably have more than the three I have so I will continue to blog away!

As I was searching through the blogs of our syndicated guests this evening, the title "The Best RSS Advice I’ve Ever Heard" caught my eye. Ironically, the advice on this post ended up being about headlines. The advice, “Write better headlines and you’ll get more readers” is something so simple that I believe many people in our class don't really think about. Starting with this blog, I will try to make all of my titles stand out in order to attract as many people as possible. I think it would be interesting to add counters on each person's post so that everyone could see how many people visited each one. Then, maybe we could see if people really read the ones with the better titles.

I usually do not miss class, but this Thursday I will be absent because it is the Jewish New Year, Rosh Hashanah. I wanted to inform everyone why I will not be present and would love to hear about any important information I miss. While all of you will be in class learning, I will be sitting in services at my synagogue, Shaarey Zedek. Rosh Hashanah is a very important day in the Jewish Religion and is known as a High Holy Day. I put a link to a page about the holiday for anyone that is interested.
